History and Future of the Nissan Sentra

Last updated 4 years ago

What began as the Nissan Sunny in Japan back in the early 1980s has now become one of the most revered compact economy cars on the market. Learn more about the history of the Nissan Sentra and what the upcoming 2013 Nissan Sentra has to offer you.

First Generation Nissan Sentra

Available as a two-door sedan, four-door sedan, three-door hatchback, and five-door wagon, the first-generation Nissan Sentra satisfied the needs of many drivers in the early 1980s. With an EPA-rated 48 miles-per-gallon combined mileage, the first-generation Sentra took the title of best-in-segment fuel economy.

Nissan Sentras of the Late ‘80s, Early ‘90s

The second-generation Nissan Sentra, capable of producing between 69 and 90 horsepower, was built to last for the long haul. In fact, many second-generation Sentras are still on the road today, consuming about as much fuel as a modern hybrid car. To spice up the Sentra in the early ‘90s, Nissan debuted the Sentra SE-R. Upping power to 140 horses and throwing in four-wheel disc brakes with fully independent suspension, the Nissan Sentra SE-R coupe was a blast to drive, and fortunately didn’t break the bank.

Fifth- and Sixth-Gen Nissan Sentras

Released in 2000, the fifth-generation Nissan Sentra, available only as a sedan, was all about value. The fifth-gen Sentra carried Nissan’s sterling reputation for reliability, was refined on the inside, handled well, and came with plenty of standard amenities. To improve it for the sixth-generation—currently in production—Nissan focused mostly on styling to make it a more noticeable car with a bolder personality, while making the car more efficient.

2013 Nissan Sentra

Dropping weight, adding length, and enjoying more efficiency, the upcoming Nissan Sentra will feature a new grille, LED headlights, and is slated to earn 40 mpg on the highway for 2013. The seventh-generation Sentra gives you luxurious options like a 5.8-inch navigation system with a hands-free text messaging system, Bluetooth connectivity, and an 8-speaker Bose stereo system.
