Though the new Nissan Altima is much larger in size than the first Altima that was released 20 years ago, it is still a family car that looks great and is fun to drive. To trace the history of the Nissan Altima and find out how it became the sporty, affordable car it is today, read the following article.
The First- and Second-Generation Nissan Altima
The Nissan Altima first appeared in the United States in 1993. This car was very small, and offered a sportier alternative to the compact Toyota Corolla. It was powered by a 150-horsepower four-cylinder engine and could be mated to either a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. When Nissan engineers re-designed the car in 1998, they left most of it the same because it was selling so well.
Third-Generation Nissan Altima
In 2002 Nissan upsized the Altima to a mid-size sedan in order to keep pace with what American drivers wanted—a dependable yet boldly styled family car. The standard engine now made 175 horsepower, and there was an optional 250-hp V6 available for drivers that wanted a bit more power.
Fourth-Generation Nissan Altima
With a boost in style for 2007, the Nissan Altima was easily the most attractive economy sedan available. This Altima came with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) for the first time, which promised more efficiency in both power delivery and fuel economy. The car was refreshed three years later to include better materials and an optional 275-hp V6.
2013 Nissan Altima
The new Nissan Altima features more aggressive looks, and earns 38 mpg on the highway with a 182-hp four-cylinder. New standard features include Bluetooth connectivity, keyless ignition, solid safety construction, and the Easy Fill Tire alert—a feature that beeps the horn when you have reached the recommended PSI while filling your tires. Optional features include the rearview camera system, which offers lane departure, blind-spot detection, and parking assistance.
