A Look to the Future of the Nissan Leaf

Last updated 4 years ago

Nissan engineers are always looking to provide customers with access to the latest advancements in automotive efficiency. With over 10,000 Nissan Leaf units sold in the United States, battery-powered vehicles are steadily gaining traction. And now, Nissan is adding four models to its EV family. Take a look at these EV concepts that were recently unveiled at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show to get an idea of what the future of the Nissan Leaf looks like.

The Infiniti EV

This Infiniti EV is based off of the same electric powertrain as the Leaf, but it promises up to 20 percent more driving range and a top speed of 130 mph. Infiniti engineers are set on pioneering inductive charging technology which only requires you to park over a charging plate, rather than using a traditional plug-in configuration (though the latter will still be available for public charging stations). Keep your eyes open for this luxury EV sedan in 2014.

The Utility Mover

Also coming out in 2014 is a utility van based off of the Nissan NV200, which you might recognize as New York City’s new official taxi. This elegant all-electric cargo van offers a 1,500-lb. payload capacity, but the word is mum on whether or not it will appear in Nissan dealerships stateside or if it will offer multiple configurations.

The Toss-up

Although Nissan has been vocal about its plans to offer four EVs (including the Nissan Leaf) by 2016, exactly what the last addition to the upcoming Nissan EV lineup will be is still up to debate.—and the three choices couldn’t be any more different. The Esflow is a high-performance sports car capable, the Pivo3 (named for its three wheels) is an ultra-compact minicar, and the Townwood is a small yet capable crossover. Whatever Nissan unveils by 2016, it’s certain to be an evolutionary step forward in EV technology.
